Sizing Up Your Down Comforter

29 March; Author: ComfortWithMyComforter

Down comforters are terrific bed toppers; they are luxurious, provide warmth and coziness, and are nice-looking to boot. There are comforters suited for almost all types of beds, and they are conventionally bigger and wider than fitted sheets and the mattresses they cover.  Twin beds for instance, have mattresses that measure 39 by 75 inches or 99 by 190 centimeters.  Twin fitted sheets have the same dimensions, but comforters for twin beds measure 68 by 86 inches or 173 by 218 centimeters.

Comforters for Full-sized beds normally have identical dimensions as the ones for Queen-sized mattresses.  Both measure 86 by 86 inches or 218 by 218 centimeters.  In contrast, Full fitted sheets are only 54 by 75 inches or 137 by 190 centimeters in width and length, while Queen fitted sheets are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.  Sheet and comforter sets are also available in Extra Long Twin, King, and California King to match the same mattress sizes.

duvet covers, comforter sets, down comforterThere is a wide variation of how frequently people clean their bedding. Most people wash or dry clean their comforter sets every two to three weeks. This is fine unless you are allergic to dust mites.

We shed skin cells at all times and at night we shed these in our beds. Unfortunately this serves as food for dust mites. If you have allergies to dust mites, then it makes sense to keep the skins cells in your bed to a minimum. So you will want to clean your comforter set more frequently.

If you have a down comforter then having machine washable duvet covers for it lets you more easily clean your bedding while being able to add variety to the look of your bedroom at the same time. In this case the down comforter can be cleaned a lot less frequently.

down comforter, baffle box, pacific coast grandia, down comfortersOne of the components of a down comforter is the baffle box. A down comforter is made up of rectangles, normally squares. Baffle boxes are these rectangles.

On a comforter the baffle boxes are created by sewing the front and back fabric together to form rectangles. The down is evenly distributed among the boxes so as to have uniform warmth and comfort. The baffled boxes allow the down to expand to its fullest potential for the highest loft and no cold spots. This gives the down comforter the appearance of depth.

One of the difference in quality of down comforters is how well the baffle boxes are constructed. For better quality look for true baffle box, comfort lock or end-to-end to insure the baffle boxes are fully sealed. Down comforters with baffle boxes that are not fully sealed tend to have the down move from baffle box to baffle box causing the original even distribution of down to diminish.
